Penang, Malaysia. The COMPETEN-SEA Project was present at the 4th KANITA International Conference on Gender Studies (KICGS) 2018 and members of the project hosted a session entitled ‘Special MOOC Panel on Women’s Empowerment through Technology’ in order to disseminate activities within the COMPETEN-SEA project. The session was moderated by Dr. Radziah Adam.
The panel consisted of four speakers. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marita presented COMPETEN-SEA activities in the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia. The focus of the presentation was the Philippines’ MOOC developed for the rural health workers in the Pangasinan area.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hafizah Selamat discussed the profiles of single mothers in Penang and how these profiles are covered by the various definitions for “single mothers” used by government agencies.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Poline Bala highlighted the effort of bringing technology to remote communities and discussed the eBario project in the context of single mothers in Bario and Ba Kelalan regions.
The final speaker was Dr. Aisyah Abdul Rahim with a talk entitled “Learning from MOOCs: Reflective journeys into developing an inter-institutional MOOC that empowers single mothers in Malaysia”. She presented her role in the design and development of a MOOC between Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).
