COMPETEN-SEA USM MOOC Entrepreneurship for Single Mothers kick off with a pilot programme

Tasek Gelugor, Penang – On February 19th, the COMPETENSEA’s ‘MOOC Entrepreneurship for Single Mothers’ – Jom Duit! – was presented by USM researchers to a small group of very enthusiastic single mothers from the surrounding area of Seberang Prai, Penang. A total of 23 single mothers showed up and participated throughout the session.

The afternoon session started with welcoming remarks by the Deputy Director of Jabatan Pembangunan Wanita Pulau Pinang, Puan Siti Zaharah Sulaiman, and followed by a briefing session by Assoc. Prof. Dr Nor Hafizah Selamat from KANITA USM. The briefing focuses on getting the audience’s willingness to participate in a pilot programme for an online course – MOOC Entrepreneurship for Single Mothers. This pilot programme is very important in ensuring the COMPETENSEA USM team gets to identify any hiccups in terms of the actual day to day running and deployment of the MOOC which is planned for the second quarter of 2019.

With the main objective of generating income from home, the online course was simply introduced to the audience by Dr. Radziah Adam, of PPPJJ USM, as a collection of short courses: a choice of ‘Baja Kompos’, ‘Kek dan Kek Cawan’ or ‘Madu Kelulut’ as a final hands-on project; along with a collection of fundamental short courses such as Introduction to Entrepreneurship and Social Media Marketing. What differentiated this MOOC from other online courses on entrepreneurship is a full range of Personal Wellbeing courses that cover Women’s Reproductive Health, Family Law and Happiness. Therefore, single mothers who participate in this MOOC will not only learn about entrepreneurship skills but also to be aware of their own rights as single mothers and their health status.

Those single mothers interested to participate in the pilot programme will be required to complete the online courses within a stipulated time period and will also receive a token of appreciation along with certificate of course completion. When asked who would be willing to participate, almost all i.e. 20 single mothers decided to join the pilot project. Given the short time period, we entertained a quick question and answer session while refreshment was being served.

On behalf of COMPETENSEA USM team, we would like say thank you to the support and endorsement by Jabatan Pembangunan Wanita Pulau Pinang, Puan Marhaini Abu Bakar, Pengarah JPW, Puan Siti Zaharah Sulaiman, Timbalan Pengarah JPW, Puan Suhana Saad and Puan Zahirah Zakaria for arranging and providing the venue (Dewan Nur Parlimen Tasek Gelugor) and most importantly to the 23 single mothers for showing their whole-hearted support for the programme – Jom Duit! (Let’s make money, literally)
